The Lafarge Group is a world leader in construction
materials, holding top-ranking positions in each of its five divisions:
cement, concrete and aggregates (crushed stone, sand and gravel),
roofing, gypsum and specialty products. Lafarge products are found
virtually everywhere, from sidewalks to schools, highways to high-rises.
Through its commitment to the development of new materials, Lafarge
offers construction industry professionals "new solutions for
a new century".
Many Lafarge products are used in the construction of environmental
projects (e.g. concrete, reinforcing steel, pre-cast pipe and structures
are used extensively in wastewater treatment plants).
Its Canadian subsidiary, Lafarge Canada Inc., is based in Montreal,
Quebec and employs more than 5,200 people across Canada, including
613 salaried positions in B.C., where it has 25 sites and operations.
Lafarge Group's first North American operation was established in
Richmond, B.C. more than 40 years ago with the construction of its
cement plant on the Fraser River. Lafarge operates ready-mix concrete
plants in British Columbia, most of them in the Lower Mainland and
the Fraser Valley.

Lafarge and the Environment
Preserving and protecting the environment is a key strategic objective
for Lafarge.
One of its stated Principles of Actions
is:
"To respect the common interest. To participate
in the life of communities where we operate. To operate responsibly
toward the environment. To be guided by the principles of integrity,
openness and respect in our commitments."
The Lafarge Group has been involved in efforts to
protect the environment for more than 30 years. Lafarge develops
its own standards, among the toughest on an international scale,
for application in its new industrial plants and all large-scale
renovation projects.
Lafarge has gone one step further in it efforts to
ensure environmental preservation. Less than a year ago, in March
2000 in Paris, Lafarge was the first industrial corporation to sign
a world-wide partnership agreement with the World Wildlife Fund
(WWF), under the framework of WWF's "Conservation Partner Program".
